Wood Floor Installation

You’ve been in the same home for 20 years.  A turn of the century craftsman style house in Downtown Nashville, the home isn’t just full of city history, it’s full of family memories.

From the mantle over the fireplace, adorned with photos from your kids state baseball championships, and high school graduation, to the bedrooms, full of the paintings your daughter mastered to get into her arts high school, to the tree in the middle of the porch in your backyard, with the initials of each of your family members, carved into the trunk the day you moved in.  This home has memories.  But while the photos, paintings, and carvings are intentional, the spots and stains in your carpet, are not.

Is your carpet showing obvious signs of aging, maybe it’s time to get a new hardwood floor.  Here are some tips from Vision Floors of Franklin, Tennessee on how to installhardwood floor in your home.

1.)  Purchase wood that will compliment your space.  Picking wood with a finish that matches the pre existing look and feel of your home is of the utmost importance.  Just like your ceilings, your floors really dictate the overall feel of your home.
2.)  Store the wood for your floor in your space for at least two weeks.  Although wood is solid, it’s surprisingly malleable and will expand and contract based on elevation, humidity, etc.  so storing your wood in your space ensures your new floors won’t be popping up anytime soon.
3.)  Remove the old floor all of the way down to the subfloor for a new level floor.
4.)  Lay the floor along the longest and straightest wall in your home.  Choosing a shorter wall or one that that has a slant will make the wood flooring appear slanted throughout your entire room.
5.)  Rack uneven boards.  If you stagger boards, it can give your floor a nice rustic chic look.  It also keeps imperfections in the wood, or uneven boards from becoming too apparent to home guests.

Home of your Dreams. Nightmare Floors.

You just bought your first home.  A beautiful early 20th century one story ranch house in a nice and up and coming part of town.  The outside is beautiful, with a yard full of trees and a garden to boot.  You also have a nice new fence the previous owners installed, as well as a new roof.

Inside, a number of remodeling jobs have also been completed.  New bathtubs and toilets in the bathrooms, new sinks and tile in the kitchens, and a number of refinished in home storage such as closets and shelfing. There’s just one problem: the floors.

Downstairs, the hardwood has become warped and chipped, not to mention faded and lacking in any sort of shine.  The previous homeowners couldn’t recall a time they had had the floor refinished in the last 20 years… and it shows.  Upstairs, a drab mid-century greenish carpet simply needs to be ripped up and replaced, with something, anything.
